God is at work inside the darkness of the prison! And twice a year he assembles teams of servants to go into the Maryland Correctional Institution at Jessup (MCIJ) with Kairos. The MCIJ facility is a men’s medium security prison.
Have you been looking for a way to connect with new friends and to make a difference in the world around you? The Kairos Prison Ministry of Severn Run may be your answer. Men’s missions teams form once in the fall and once in the spring. The Church at Severn Run has a goal to provide at least 5 men to serve on these 40-man teams. Team members receive training on 4 Saturdays prior to the team event. Once trained, team members can participate on the weekend ministering to prison residents.
If you are a little nervous and not quite sure if you are ready to go into the prison, men and women should consider serving on the outside support team. We typically seek 4 individuals to serve on the support team. Support team members prepare meals on training dates and on the weekend the team goes into the prison. We also seek groups to sponsor meals for the team on training dates.
Still too big a commitment, but think you might be interested to learn more?
Consider attending the closing ceremony inside the men’s correctional institution. These take place on the final Sunday after the ministry team has gone into the prison and can be a very moving experience hearing how God has ministered to the people participating in the program.
Another way to support this ministry is through a Cookie and Poster Party. These happen before the men's mission team goes into the prison. Bring two dozen cookies to share and your creativity to make posters and write letters to go into the Jessup Men’s Maryland Correctional Institution with the team that will share the gospel with the incarcerated men there. Parties are typically held in the church atrium.
Regarding the mandatory trainings for the Kairos Weekend:
These team sessions prepare participants for this experience – both spiritually and in terms of assigned jobs. Please note that in order for team members to be spiritually and operationally ready for this one-of-a-kind mission trip, 75% attendance at team meetings is required. That means that participants can miss only one team meeting. Breakfast and Lunch is provided during team meetings.
