Every story matters! There are 175 more people attending life at The Church at Severn Run than there were a year ago! Every number is a story...every story has a name...every name is near and dear to God -and it matters! Can any of us say, toward God, that someone else's story doesn't...

Your Story : Your Witness

But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

(1 Peter 3:15 ESV)

Most of us claiming the resurrection of Christ act like we don’t have a story to tell. We might think we can’t be a witness for Jesus because our story isn’t “good enough.”

That is simply not true.

A witness is an "attestation of fact, event, etc., from personal knowledge;” (source) Witnessing has nothing to do with our goodness, or our imperfections. Each of us can speak with authority based on our personal knowledge of the situation.

Personal knowledge is an important element of a Christian witness. And personal knowledge is something God promises us as we pursue a relationship with him.

And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. (1 John 5:20)

What is your personal knowledge of Jesus? What is your personal knowledge of the hope that Jesus’ resurrection gives to you? This is your story. This is what you can share.

As a Jesus follower you have personal knowledge of what Jesus has done in your life. You have personal knowledge of how Jesus changes your heart. You have personal knowledge about why you trust him. You have a story about giving up your life and following after him.

Your story doesn’t have to be dramatic. It certainly won’t be like anyone else’s story because you’re unique. But you do have a story...a story about the day you invited Jesus into your heart...a story about how he reveals himself to you. This is what we must share.

Have you prayed prayers and seen answers? This is your witness.

Have you seen miracles - even small ones? This is your testimony.

Have you seen Jesus revealed in and around you? This is your story.

Your witness, your testimony of fact from personal knowledge and relationship with Jesus, is your story about how Jesus is real to you.

No one can refute it.

As a disciple you must share it.

And God will use it to bring glory to himself.

ordinary life

Despite how we may feel at times, we all have extraordinary stories to tell. Our lives are all uniquely different, and our stories are not something that we should shy away from. Jesus told stories in order to convey important truths in a way that people would understand. We can all relate to stories. The religious leaders of Jesus' time only wanted people to follow the rules. Rules try to enforce only one interpretation, and attempt to write the ending before the ending has even been written!

Jesus knew that following these so called “rules” would only keep people away from the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus wants us to live our lives together, unbound by rules, sharing in each other’s stories.

Make peace with your story, do not be afraid to tell it!

Your story will always be open ended, only in heaven will you find out the end of your story! Your story will go on to impact those you have loved and cared for and those you have passed it on to!

Can any of us say, toward God, that someone else's story doesn't matter? The heart of our faith is that every life is worth the blood of Christ! Every life is of infinite value to God! That's how He loves and because He values the stories of other people -we do too!

So, we just want to praise God for your willingness to invite others, to be a bridge and help other people know they really matter to God!

Every empty seat represents a story that is probably someone living their life without the knowledge and the benefit of the love of Jesus Christ. Every empty seat represents someone for whom Jesus died, that He's going after--but we're not. From now on, when you see an empty seat, I want you to see a person that we have to get out on the road and reach!

Our purpose as a church is to reach as many people as possible. How we're going to do that? I don't know, we're gonna walk with Jesus and see! We are gonna move out on the road to be creative in revealing the love of the Father in the Life of the Son in the Power of the Spirit and reach as many people as we possibly can because "God so loved the world..." (John 3:16). This is a Jesus-centered journey! He's passionate about every life! Every person matters, every human life is of infinite worth and value to the Lord our God!

Let's keep it up and reach as many people as possible -until heaven is full and hell is as empty as possible, our work isn't done! -Dr. Drew Shofner
