A change of attitude is a change of life!

A change of attitude is a change of life

Over and over in my life, I have looked at what I have and was mad that I didn't have more. We look around at what other people have, and in all of that comparison there is this basic foundational accusation, "God, you are not good. You didn't give me a winning hand, therefore I can't win, so why even try?" Then what happens in our addictions, in our marriages, in our divorces, in our affairs, and in our sinning is we throw our hands down and we walk away mad and we're not even gonna try! It's an incredible, incredible sin! Misinterpreting God's good heart results in a hard heart and a wasted life. I want to help you understand where you are and how God can change where you are and bring you into an amazing new place. Where you and I don't have to live resenting life, resenting God, quitting on life, and simply believing that we can't win!

If we're honest, many of us resent what God has given us or what He has not given us. We feel like we're on a journey that we can't complete. We look around and see what everybody else got and we're mad at the giver! Then we make this foundational shift that changes everything. When we decide God isn't good, our hearts begin to harden, our world begins to go light-less, we begin to die and passions begin to drain and pretty soon we're in a place where we can't win! When you feel like you're overwhelmed, when you feel like you've been dealt a bad hand, and when you feel like there's no way you can win, you don't even try!

Instead of living our lives up as God would intend, we're quitting in life, overwhelmed, because we haven't been given enough. Because we have hurt and people have betrayed us and because we have faced times where we have had to struggle and because God has allowed 'hard' to happen in our lives, we look at Him without faith and we accuse Him of being evil! But the scriptures say in Psalm119:68 that "You are good and what You do is good." Guys, I'm telling you that this is the foundation of everything. The foundation of life is that God is good and endlessly generous. The whole experience of your every day life is going to be determined by what your heart decides about this one simple truth: Is God good or is God bad?

Jesus knew that in a world that was broken and separated from Him, that everything would be crazy and that nothing would ever be right until our souls would be eternally connected with His heart! He knew that we would misinterpret God. He knew that we would be in competition with one another. He knew that community would be broken and that relationship would be fractured in a 360 degree kind of way. And so "God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only son..." (John 3:16) to enter into all of our brokenness and all of our insanity and all of our losing, our hating, our lying and despair; to bring salvation and hope! God brought His kingdom into this broken world to make things right again! Accept your gifting, however you are gifted, it is the handiwork of God and play to win with the hand you're dealt. Some of you are stuck where you are because you won’t quit!

I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Normally when we think about quitting something it’s because it’s a bad thing, but the reality is some of you are stuck where you are because you won’t quit. Some of the things that you and I won’t quit are the very things that are keeping us from the life that we are longing for inside. I want you to understand the value of quitting the right things; we have to quit before we can start.

Some of the very things that we won’t quit are hurting the people around us. There are homes that are just filled with toxic negativity and people are negative about their kids and negative about each other. It’s hellish, and it’s a sin! Sin is a corrosive that destroys life to the core and that’s why God hates it; because He hates to see His children harmed!

We were never called to promote satan’s cynical vision of life! Satan is a cynic. You get that right? He doesn’t believe in you and me, and he’s looking for our imminent failure. He sees all of our flaws and faults and is ready to highlight them to anybody. He’s cynical about your worth, your abilities, your heart, your intelligence. He sees the worst in everything about you and is willing to skywrite that for you and the world to see! But God is the opposite. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Two different agendas!

I want to remind you that this earth is not our home; we are citizens of another kingdom. Sometimes it just scares me to think about some of the suffering that might be ahead; but then I’m like whatever, I have Jesus! I have the most positive message in the world! There is suffering and a struggle here, but there is believing that has to take place and here’s the deal, we live by believing and not by seeing (2 Corinthians 5:7).

In my old nature, it’s easy for me to see the downside of just about everything. Part of that is my background growing up as the child of an alcoholic in a military family that moved frequently; and life was hard. Things were always changing, always unpredictable and chaotic and so it was easy to develop this mentality that life is just harder than it is good. When I came to know Christ, I experienced the most positive message that I had ever heard. Hearing the good news (the Gospel) about Jesus was so different than hearing about religion. This personal relationship was life changing and so much more than a once a week exercise. This was a whole life transformation!

When I gave my life to Jesus, I kept my old nature, which is ridiculously negative, but that nature began to die and God gave me a new nature and the cool thing is that you’ve got that same new nature. Remember, negativity comes easy for you because it’s your old nature. In your homes, there are hard things and I get that. I know that, and I honor your struggle and your pain. But I would also say to you, so what? So what do you do with Jesus in the real world and in your home? Is hell more real in your home or is Jesus more real? –Dr. Drew Shofner
