Run Your Race!

There are two approaches to a spiritual life; passive or active. Most of us take a passive approach to our spiritual journey and we just kind of assume that it will happen. Can I just say how crazy that is! What “just happens” that is good in your life all on its own? How good does...

Love can't stay small.

Matthew 22:37

The reason that so many of us settle for less than Gods best is because we don’t love God! I’m just telling you, that is the biggest mistake that any of us could ever make in our lives. When our hearts are ignited by Jesus, and we love well, we will live bigger than our circumstances, bigger than our problems, bigger than life around us! God is infinitely bigger than all of our problems, but our biggest problem is that we have a view of God that’s just too stinking small. The reality is that "LOVE CAN’T STAY SMALL!" But the only way that this is possible, is if you let God love you!

If you let love do its work in your life, you will grow spiritually. You will commit to following Jesus in a way that will take over your life and bless you and everyone around you for generations to come! Jesus made it simple, “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and all of your soul and all of your mind.” (Matthew 22:37

If you have opened your heart and dared to believe that there is a God who knows you and loves you and delights in you. If the joy of that has seeped inside of you, it will continue to grow and take over. It is a fire that will ignite your heart and your life and it will grow and you will give your life away to Jesus! It’s not about acting and being religious. It’s about being a new person with a new freedom and accepting the love of God and accepting who you are in this world!

Guys, remember that love can’t stay small. If you love God, your life will change and it will change for good; this is called “growth”. What I want you to do is to commit to growth by becoming spiritually mature. God’s love was never small for us. Remember the scope and the scale of this "God story" that we are in? For God so loved the world…in all of its brokenness...that He left Heaven and He came down to earth and He gave His one and only son and now, in response to love, if anyone of us would believe in Him, we are not going to perish but have eternal life (John 3:16)

Our lives aren’t going to be hopeless and chained to addiction or caught in a generational curse and unhappiness. Our lives aren’t going to be utterly broken and drowning in self pity. Our lives aren’t going to be circling the toilet. No, on the opposite, we are going to have life of an everlasting quality and quantity that we can't even imagine! That’s the “God story” that we live in, and it’s not a story of legalism, it’s a story of love. It’s the Jesus Story! –Dr. Drew Shofner

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called!

God doesn't call the qualified

There is a race that God has marked out for you, and it is a run to glory! You have to choose to get off of the easy chair and out of the lazy boy; off the couch and run the race marked out for you! Your race isn’t somebody else’s race, your gifts aren’t somebody else’s gifts, your call isn’t somebody else’s call!

It is very personalized by an amazing God who ponders the thoughts of six billion people and calls each one of us into a life that is choice based, spirit driven and Christ revealing. We are called to grow as individuals, we are called to grow as a church. Our growth, His Glory! Do you get it? -Dr. Drew Shofner

Run Your Race!

Hebrews 12

There are two approaches to a spiritual life; passive or active. Most of us take a passive approach to our spiritual journey and we just kind of assume that it will happen. Can I just say how crazy that is! What “just happens” that is good in your life all on its own?

How good does your yard look with a passive approach? If you can’t grow a garden by pulling up a chair and watching dirt, then how in the world do you think you can have a life of spiritual growth by being passive and doing nothing; waiting for it to happen?

Do you know what you are going to get with dirt if you just wait for stuff to happen? WEEDS! Do you know what you’re going to get in your own spiritual life if you just wait for stuff to happen?

This is true in all areas of life; everything takes effort, action and intention. If we just did what we felt like doing, how many of you would go to work every day? I mean, it seems like all of life takes work doesn’t it? If it’s true that everything in life takes intentionality; from tying your shoes, to going to school, to being a faithful husband, or a God-honoring wife, then those things take choices that are deep from the heart; and it’s work!

The things that you are not proud of in life are the things that were easy and the things that you are the most proud of, in the best sense of the word, are the things that took effort and intentionality and were a courageous choice!

I want to challenge you today to choose to actively approach your spiritual life in such a way that you bring glory to God by actively living out of an obedience that is aggressive, faithful and responsible. The word responsible means able to respond! My prayer is that we would hear God speak to us in a way that will transform life forever.

God has spoken into us this truth that life is to be a day by day experience; a journey of growth. Your story is to be an upward story, not a downward spiral! Your story is not to be a story of increasing brokenness, addiction, or despair. Your story is not to be a story of decrease; it is to be a story of increase. We are running a race that ends in Glory! Do you realize that? Now you have to step back and think, “How will I run it?” –Dr. Drew Shofner

We are here to change a world!

We are here to change a world

Our goal here at The Church at Severn Run is not to have a lot of people who are content to do nothing. If that's the case, let's wrap it up, let's call it a day and let's go home.

Your faith is noticed, and it teaches. Other people are watching how you live, and the simple reality is that other people's eternal destinies, I believe, are profoundly impacted by how well we love them and how well we reveal and live Jesus as we listen deeply. We can have a generational impact on our community. It's not something that we have to do on our own, the Spirit of God comes inside of us and translates life for us so that we realize we are blessed and that we have something to offer the world.

In the New Testament, we are told that the Son of God actually came to planet earth in a surprising way and He taught us a new way that we are actually expected to follow in our day. We are actually expected to do in our day what Jesus did in His; to do in our time what the church in the book of Acts did in it's time. God actually expects for His church to grow, He actually expects for His disciples to share the Good News of Jesus, and He actually believes that He has the power to change lives. But the question is, do we believe it? There are only one of two possibilities; either Jesus' words are merely words, or Jesus' words are the ground and the construct of all reality as we know it!

I want to tell you that Jesus took eleven unqualified, uneducated nobody's in the eyes of the world, He led them on a mission, and by the power of the Holy Spirit they changed the world. If Jesus did that with eleven who believed, what could He do with eleven hundred who believe at The Church at Severn Run today? -Dr. Drew Shofner
