Fix our eyes

How do you use power?

Posted by Dr. Drew Shofner on

In Matthew 5:5 Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." Meekness has to do with the use of power and how we use power, Meekness isn't weakness. The meek are those who use power to serve Gods purposes. Jesus' people know Jesus and they live Jesus. They serve his...

Where are you stuck?

Where are you stuck

In your own stuckness, if you choose to live by what you see instead of what God has said, you're going to be able to name all the reasons why life is bad, and why life is unfair, why failure is inevitable, why God 'must' be against you, and why there's no reason to hope or even try.

In Numbers 13-14, time and again the people of Jerusalem have to make a choice between what God says and what they see. And time and time again, they make their choice not on what God said but on what they see. What I want you to know about this story is something I call ‘The Turning Point Spiral.’ It is a point of decision where you decide whether you are going to look at circumstances, or the promise of God. It is that small moment before you step off, or stay stuck! It's where everything changes for the better in trusting the promises of God, and you become increasingly free and alive, or you stay stuck and everything begins to spiral down into a Godless disaster!

The turning point spiral I'm talking about is when we are in a moment of crisis or pain, and we make a choice to live by what we see and feel rather than by what God said. If we choose to live by what God said, then we have to fight and trust, and at that moment a spiral begins and things begin to accelerate upward. Your life begins to get brighter and better and it reveals Jesus in ways that brings hope to life! It may be slow and it may take a while, but its inevitable!

On the other hand, when you choose not to trust God, His promise goes into eclipse and the downward spiral begins going all the way down the express elevator. The sad thing about this is that either way the spiral goes, we take people with us! When you and I disregard the promise of God, when we choose to live in eclipse, guess what? It's lightless!

So here’s the deal, what areas are you stuck in and do you want to be free? God is about freeing people and breaking chains. When God says something, it is settled. When God says something, it doesn’t matter how you feel, or how things look, nothing else matters. In my flesh I argue with that all the time and I whine a lot because God calls me to stay in the fight and I don’t want to fight, I want everything to be easy and instant. I mean if Heaven could come right this moment that would be perfect!

Proverbs 3:5-6, says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." A path is a place of walking, it goes from somewhere to somewhere; it is not a place of stuck! The Word of God says that people who truly believe Him do not trust their own take on life. A part of learning to believe God is learning NOT to believe ourselves! Did you realize that? So where are you stuck? -Dr. Drew Shofner

Fix our eyes

We cannot listen to God and listen to our own hearts and fear at the same time. Our hearts will ultimately be captured by a single focus that will either be the glory of God and the mission of Jesus or ourselves and how we feel and what we think.

God speaks; He is not a silent God. He has given His Word and He tells us that if we will trust His Word over what we see, that He will deliver us into the promise! -Dr. Drew Shofner

We cannot look forward and back at the same time.

My whole life is about being stuck, when I grew up, I was stuck in an alcoholic family. I carried the 'stuck-ness' with me throughout a lot of life. Being poor, you're kind of stuck when you're poor and I could go on, but I want to share with you that being stuck is not a matter of circumstances. It is not a matter of being a victim and being over powered by life around you; being stuck is a choice!

Being stuck is a choice to live from what I see with my eyes instead of what God has said as a promise. We are choosing to live from what we see, what we feel, what we understand, what we interpret and how we perceive the world around us and we are living from all of that instead of from what God has said. What is normal in this world is to live alone, apart, broken, and making it in our own strength. Normal is crazy; everything is broken and everything needs to be redeemed!

The problem with living from what we see is that you and I are spiritually blind from birth. The crazy part of the blindness is that we think we can see. If you're physically blind, you probably know that you're physically blind, but if you're physically blind and are convinced that you see, and you go for a walk there's probably going to be a problem right? That is our condition and the trouble is that we bring this blindness into the church and into the mission of the body of Christ. That's why so many churches are stuck and thats the danger of us.

The simple reality is that you and I are stuck in a lot of dark places. We are stuck believing a lot of lifeless things. We are stuck and not growing in our own spiritual relationship, and God hates stuck! We stuck God on a cross and guess what? He didn't stay! So no individual in a lifeless marriage or a difficult financial crisis or no church should ever stay stuck regardless of what is against it!

Growth is a natural part of life in Christ, so where are you stuck? Do you recognize that your being stuck is a choice that you are making and you may not even believe yet that you're making the choice. You may attribute it to circumstance, situations and all kinds of things but the reality is it is a choice. Galatians 5:1 says, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

Father God, I ask that today we would be woken up, that we would come alive to the scandal of grace. That we would open our hearts to be loved by you and that we would not keep you away in anyway or say no to you. Father our hearts are open and we want your Kingdom to come and your will to be done in your church and in our lives and in our families. Father until we see Jesus, grow us! -Dr. Drew Shofner

If you stay in the fight, if you will not quit, you cannot lose!

1 john 5:4

1 John 5:4 says, "For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith."

When you come to a place of accepting and following Jesus from the outside in, and yielding control, then Jesus is in you and you have the power of God in you!

Your life is then tied to the work of Christ on the cross and in the resurrection, and if you stay in the fight, if you will not quit, you cannot lose! -Dr. Drew Shofner

We have to see the sacred in a world that sees nothing as sacred.

See the sacred

We have to see the sacred in a world that sees nothing as sacred. We have to see the sacred in a world that measures people in terms of utility, beauty, power, strength and wealth. We gotta say "to hell with all of that" and from Heaven comes a whole new way of seeing life and seeing people!

To agree with Heaven means to see the sacred in Jesus and to see the sacred in the mirror and to see the sacred through the window of your life so that everyone you see, you see as someone for whom Jesus died. Jesus shed His blood for the person next to you. I don’t care whether they can ever do anything for you, or whether they have alcohol on their breath. Jesus thinks they are of infinite worth and chose to die for them!

Some of you are so critical of your spouse, and I’m just telling you that you need to see the sacred in your husband and in your wife. You need to see the sacred in your child and you need to treasure it; you need to bring it out! You need to be a part of God’s work in their life so that they can discover their worth and they can live out their created purpose so they can fulfil the meaning of the blood of Jesus! –Dr. Drew Shofner
