#Jesus is Not Just a Social Media Status

main image

Most of us use social media to keep in touch with friends, family members, and passing acquaintances; some of us might even have hundreds of ‘friends’ we don’t even really know. Thinking about your friends’ list on something like Facebook, how many of those people do you honestly, really know? When you scroll through your news feed or status updates, do you get to peer into people’s souls, or are we just looking through a small painted window pane that blocks the view of the true brokenness within?

Just as we do with social media, so often we do with God. We post a status update that we went and saw a really good movie, had a great workout at the gym, or just ate a whole box of girl scout cookies (#noshame). And we do the same with Jesus. We ‘check in’ to church on Sunday, we might have a temporary high, and we share a cool ‘status update’. Then Monday comes, and we forget all about the last post and share an update with how we woke up late and on the way in a jerk in a Mercedes cut us off and made us hit a red light, which ultimately led us to have to park and walk an extra five minutes in to the office. And so, with a passing whim, Jesus comes up here and there, and then he’s gone again when ‘real life’ gets in the way.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

We need to move Jesus from a status update or online acquaintance to a real life, side-by-side, close and personal kind of relationship – the kind that isn’t blind to the true brokenness that fills our lives. The way that we move Jesus from something distant and unreal to something close and meaningful is by worshipping him daily through prayer, scripture, and personal time.

We devote so much of our time to worldly things – things that ultimately will fail us. Why do we worship the things that will fail us, yet ignore the one holding out his hand who’s already given everything, promising us eternal hope, love, and peace?

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. - Isaiah 54:10

Stop being passive. Don’t let the world win, let love win! Unplug from passing on fake news and start living a real-life side by side with the one who loves you more than you know, and who sings of a worth that outshines the brilliance of the sun. The creator of the universe made you perfectly in his eyes, and he wants to have a personal relationship with you. All you have to do is let him…

When We Believe, We Become The Revelation Of God!

The church of the living God

The church of the living God is called to be a powerful community of eternally inspired people who break the dark by becoming the ever-increasing light of Christ on Earth!

In Matthew 5:14, Jesus said, "You are the light of the world…" He didn't say pastors are the light of the world or people with seminary degrees are the light of the world. He didn't say people who know all the Sunday school answers are the light of the world, He said, "You are the light of the world."

If you believe in me, you are the light of the world…just like I am!

Do you understand the role you are called to play on broken planet earth? The truth is, that most of us here have been underplaying our role! Most of us here believe somebody else is going to do it, but that's not the case. You are the plan of God for planet earth --there is no Plan B!

Some of you feel you're not talented enough, but the truth is it's not about us! If we do a bunch of 'stuff' that can be explained by us, then who gets the glory? But if God does amazing things through us, and it's clear to everybody, then that's revelation and that glory that goes to God!

The miracle of the incarnation is that God takes dead things and fills them with a life that is His! Jesus lives in you and when you become a believer, you become the revelation of God and the Spirit of God lives inside of you and you're no longer limited by your abilities and what you have. In fact, everything that you don't have becomes something that God uses to reveal Himself!

That's why the Apostle Paul says, "I praise God for my weakness for when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 12:10 paraphrased)

We have no excuse for not changing the world!

When we believe, we become the revelation of God! It is absolutely true because the point of inspiration is not education --it's transformation.

It's time for you to allow the Spirit of God to stir up the eternal inside of you and to get inspired again! This can be the time when you 'Wake up, O sleeper' (Ephesians 5:14) and you find out who you really are and what you're capable of. It's time to fan and to flame the gift that is within you and to let God speak to you and use your gifts to change the world! -Dr. Drew Shofner

You can't let Jesus in and keep Him out!

Letting Jesus in

In Matthew 13:33 Jesus told a parable: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough."

Jesus has told us what The Kingdom is like and you and I need to make sure that what we're experiencing with what we call 'God' is letting Jesus into every area of our life and letting Him transform. It is not religion, to where we pretend that Jesus can come into here and here but He can't come in here!

To be a follower of Jesus Christ means that He is Lord over all areas of our life! It's not about us trying hard and working at transformation - it's just about letting Him in!

The truth is, when we invite The King into our home, our home becomes His home! There's a title exchange. We trade kingdoms!

If you retain control of any area of your life, you're shutting Jesus out!

If there is an area of your life that is persistent darkness, persistent anger, persistent fear. If there is an area of your life that is persistently broken, where resentments are nurtured, where loneliness is forever consuming, where pain never becomes less -those are areas where you're not letting the Savior in and where you won't let the yeast fall. Because wherever Jesus enters into, He enters in and transforms all of it!

When we keep Christ out of parts of our life, we're really keeping Christ out of all of our lives! When we shut Him out, we shut growth out, we shut light out, we shut life out! You can't let Jesus in and keep Him out!

When Jesus comes in like yeast in the dough, there's an effect! It's not a magic wand and it's not instant, but when we open up our life to Jesus Christ, He comes into our life. We don't have to do anything other than let Him in and refuse to keep Him out! He begins to do the change, He begins to do the transformation by His power and His work in us. He will absolutely change and transform everything! That's the work of a living God --it's not us!

You see, if Jesus isn't in it all, is He in at all? We gotta ask the question!

Religion let's you compartmentalize life. The Kingdom of Heaven is not like religion that leaves you in control of this area of life and that area of life. The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast and when it is sprinkled into your life, it will work it into every area of your life and it will have its transforming effect!

The Kingdom of God coming inside of you and rising up and making you great in the eyes of God is not going to be what you think it will be - so let it be different! If you've had religion in your life, understand that what you need is Jesus. All the dough had to do was receive the yeast! -Dr. Drew Shofner

Some of you are stuck where you are because you won’t quit!

I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Normally when we think about quitting something it’s because it’s a bad thing, but the reality is some of you are stuck where you are because you won’t quit. Some of the things that you and I won’t quit are the very things that are keeping us from the life that we are longing for inside. I want you to understand the value of quitting the right things; we have to quit before we can start.

Some of the very things that we won’t quit are hurting the people around us. There are homes that are just filled with toxic negativity and people are negative about their kids and negative about each other. It’s hellish, and it’s a sin! Sin is a corrosive that destroys life to the core and that’s why God hates it; because He hates to see His children harmed!

We were never called to promote satan’s cynical vision of life! Satan is a cynic. You get that right? He doesn’t believe in you and me, and he’s looking for our imminent failure. He sees all of our flaws and faults and is ready to highlight them to anybody. He’s cynical about your worth, your abilities, your heart, your intelligence. He sees the worst in everything about you and is willing to skywrite that for you and the world to see! But God is the opposite. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Two different agendas!

I want to remind you that this earth is not our home; we are citizens of another kingdom. Sometimes it just scares me to think about some of the suffering that might be ahead; but then I’m like whatever, I have Jesus! I have the most positive message in the world! There is suffering and a struggle here, but there is believing that has to take place and here’s the deal, we live by believing and not by seeing (2 Corinthians 5:7).

In my old nature, it’s easy for me to see the downside of just about everything. Part of that is my background growing up as the child of an alcoholic in a military family that moved frequently; and life was hard. Things were always changing, always unpredictable and chaotic and so it was easy to develop this mentality that life is just harder than it is good. When I came to know Christ, I experienced the most positive message that I had ever heard. Hearing the good news (the Gospel) about Jesus was so different than hearing about religion. This personal relationship was life changing and so much more than a once a week exercise. This was a whole life transformation!

When I gave my life to Jesus, I kept my old nature, which is ridiculously negative, but that nature began to die and God gave me a new nature and the cool thing is that you’ve got that same new nature. Remember, negativity comes easy for you because it’s your old nature. In your homes, there are hard things and I get that. I know that, and I honor your struggle and your pain. But I would also say to you, so what? So what do you do with Jesus in the real world and in your home? Is hell more real in your home or is Jesus more real? –Dr. Drew Shofner
